I’ve always loved the name of this digital homeschool planner. Homeschool Planet. Like “Plan-it.” See what they did there?
Homeschool Planet is likely the digital homeschool planner you will hear the most about these days. partly because it is among the oldest and partly because it simply has a ton of amazing features!

Well-Planned Gal really seems to know what works for homeschoolers! I have to say this is a beautiful platform. If you’ve ever seen or used their paper planners, you’ll know they do things pretty well.
But the flexibility and customizability of a online version is that much more!

Syllabird is still fairly new, so while you may be able to use other users’ course plans, the amount in the library may not be as big as some other apps.

Just choosing a planner is only one step toward actually using it. Then you need to get your pens and others accessories, and actually sit down and make it yours. Using the planner is the only way it can actually help you of course.
So I have included a few tips below on how to make a planner fit your needs and how to develop the habits of using it.

For years, I’ve been a bit of a planner junkie. When I got into bullet journaling a few years ago, I discovered all kinds of fun planner accessories to use with my new planners!
Even though I’ve not been using a bullet journal the last few years, I’ve still not lost my love for looking at and playing with all the fun planner things!

Tips for using a planner
It’s not the planner that’s magical, it’s the habit of using it that you have to develop. It is something you actually have to train for and does not come easily.
But if you need it, the work will be worth it!
Here are my quick tips for starting to develop a habit:
- When you have something new scheduled, write it in your planner immediately.
- If you don’t have your planner with you, text yourself or write it on a piece of paper till you can transfer it to your planner.
- Keep your planner in a place you will see it, like on a table.
- Every morning, look at your plans for the day first thing.
- At the end of the day, cross off what you accomplished and move remaining items to another day if needed.

Making a planner work for you
There are many ways you can customize a planner so that it works for you rather than always being in search of the perfect planner, and never seeming to find the right fit.
Just because your friend loves a certain planner or another is incredibily popular doesn’t mean either is right for you. But it also doesn’t mean you can’t use one of them! Sometimes you just need to alter a few things so a planner fits your needs.
Here are my top 3 tips:
- Remove pages you don’t need
- Skip sections that aren’t helpful
- Change the binding
These ideas may seem straightforward, but often we forget that we don’t have to use things exactly the way they come to us! We don’t have to use every page or keep any pages just like the way they were designed. If you aren’t a schedule person, don’t schedule anything. If you are not into detailed plans, remove those pages so you’re not always feeling guilty about it.
Ultimately, a planner is there to help and guide you as you go. Make it work for you. And maybe someday you will find a planner that works for you straight out of the box!
