Homeschooling your kids can make the monotony of your life pretty draining. It may feel like one day blurs into the next since every day is so similar. Many homeschoolers will do every day of school work in the same room never even leaving the house!
If you’re looking for an easy way to put some enthusiasm and enjoyment back into the redundancy of your homeschool, may I suggest one simple change?
Do your schoolwork somewhere else.
Yep, that’s it. Grab the books and pencils and move locations! It really can be that simple!
With the weather finally cooling off this week in Georgia, yesterday my kids and I decided to do school on the back porch. It was lovely! The fresh air and sound of the birds gave us all a much-needed boost to our day.
Over the summer, when we knew the sun would be scorching, we did schoolwork in our garage a few times with the doors open. It let us get a little fresh air without quite as much heat. We’ve also done this in the cold months or on a rainy day, though winter is fairly mild around here.
We also have been known to head to a park and pull up a bench or blanket to get some schoolwork done, followed by some playground time to let out some energy.
If the weather is more extreme where you are, you might consider heading to an indoor play area or restaurant. Coffee shops and restaurants like Chick-fil-A are great places to get schoolwork done, especially if you want a little treat to go along with school.
One of the joys of homeschooling is that it doesn’t have to be done at home. It especially doesn’t have to be done at a desk in a school room.
Maybe going somewhere else is too much for you. So maybe just move to the couch instead of the school room! A little change of scenery can bring a little joy into an otherwise monotonous day.
So far, I have been talking about places you can take your school books for a change of location. But don’t forget to also consider dropping the books and going somewhere just for fun!
Consider going to a local children’s museum or science museum. Or check out a historical site in the area. Go for a hike through the woods and look at plants, animals, and scenery.
The schoolwork will still be there when you get home.
When it’s getting hard to focus on school for days on end, sometimes all you need is a little change for a day or two! Don’t confine yourself or your kids to what you think school should look like!
Let the world see homeschoolers. Help them to accept that we are diligent, fun and creative.
Bring some joy back to your school day and step outside of the classroom. Change your scenery and see what it will do for the monotony of homeschool days.
